RUSSIA & U.S. PRESIDENT TO BECOME FRIENDS? A handshake may be imminent… | Financial Investment Services

Russia has halted plans to deploy missiles near the Polish border, following a phone conversation this week between U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.  Analysts believe this could be a sign Moscow is seeking better ties with the new U.S. President and may pave the way for dialogue on other disputes between their respective countries.

Moscow believes the U.S. interceptor system proposed by former President George W. Bush, threatens its security.  President Barack Obama has not reversed Mr. Bush’s decision, but has said he will consider it on its merits.

Russian President Medvedev said a day after Obama’s election victory he was ordering the deployment of Iskander missile systems to Russia’s Western outpost of Kaliningrad, which borders the European Union and NATO members Poland and Lithuania.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai says the earlier Russian announcement that they were going to deploy missiles…and point them at NATO allies was unwelcome, and if that decision has now been rescinded, it is a good step.
