Markets continue to show strength.  Considering that the Dow and TSX were at the 14000 ish level prior to the dramatic global market collapse two years ago, significant gains have been made since then and I expect will continue upward to those levels again.  I doubt that 14000 level will be reached this fiscal year, possibly the following year.  My opinion only…

A mix of  cash and equity funds.  No change from prior week(s)

As markets improve some adjustments to my portfolio will follow.

Best Performing Sectors re: Mutual Fund Investments:

Previous 1 month:  Global Fixed Income Funds: these should be attractive to conservative investors.

Previous 3 months:  Can. Income Trust Funds:  Also attractive for all  conservative investment types.

Previous 3 months:  Can. Sm/Mid Cap Equity Funds:  These funds are still hanging in there despite the uncertainty shown in the market place during the last few weeks.  More aggressive funds that are sure to pay dividends going forward.

•Personal Portfolio Holdings:  No changes from prior week, still holding a mix of cash and equity funds.  If market and commodity prices continue to drop from their current levels, one would have to believe further economic recovery will be further down the road than most anticipated.

Personal Portfolio Holdings:

Due to current erratic market conditions, some monies are in cash and remaining equity positions are being monitored at this time.  A further decline in the market place will of course require more equity funds be sold and moved into cash or money market positions.    

As charts above indicate markets have dropped significantly during the past month.  Personally I thought President Obama’s state of the union address and other information the following day would have sent some sort of reassurance to the investment community.  I would hope that upcoming corporate earnings reports are significantly high enough to reflect progress has been made in this continuing economic battle for stability.

 Due to President Obama’s new tax on big banks and equally significant news of  a shift in power in the U.S. senate, the markets reacted accordingly this past week.  Not being a politician, I certainly can’t forecast if any more news detrimental to the market place is on the horizon.  I would expect not, since this kind of behavior could very well cause a huge set back in recovery from last years market lows.

It would appear that North American markets are having trouble moving higher to their next levels.  The Dow hesitant and still holding  under the 11,000 mark and likewise the TSX not quite ready to break into the 12,000 level.  I would expect this to change in the not too distant future, possibly the next week or two.  Once these new levels have been reached, it should be onward and upward to new highs unless some unforseen drastic economic news rears it’s head.  This would certainly delay the inevitable.

As the numbers above indicate, market and precious metals/energy prices continue to climb steadily.  As this trend continues, I believe wise and prudent portfolio investments will reflect significant gains continuing thru 2010.  Of course one must always be aware of any signals that  could indicate a slowing or downturn in the market place.
